Gao, Xiaofeng; Appeal for internet freedom of speech
The boost of the internet grants Chinese people a relative free space of speech which is not in strict control of the in party’s publicity department. Chinese netizens take advantage of this rare free space to express them freely, which receive social wide response, and restrain to some extent to government and the in party. But meanwhile, people find that in recent years, Chinese Communist authorities further strengthened to the supervision of internet and media, and it becomes more and more strict. The incidents of “guilty for speech” are getting more and more, space of freedom of speech is compressed smaller and smaller. The internet is gradually becoming the point of authority’s strict control and supervision.
In 2008, the authority has strengthened manpower and financial resources, further identified concrete responsible department, reinforced supervision of internet, deleted sensitive posts, and improved the ability of controlling internet unceasingly. If the internet and forum don’t obey and coordinate the authorities’ control, no careful “self-censorship”, it must be “blockaded” and “closed”. When netizen surf on the internet, they will easily find out that more and more webs are unable to display: “filtering system” is closer and closer, “sensitive words” are more and more, and the space for internet free speech is smaller and smaller! Apparently, Chinese Communist authority is afraid of voices of not being controlled by authority, and afraid of people’s political speech and comment, so the authority throws out those dissidents under the banner of attacking obscenity and pornography and borrowing ambiguous definition of “harmful information”.
We are well aware that, throughout the history, freedom of speech strangled by government power is with the most destructive power; but indeed, the civilization has developed to an extent that cannot bear such action of forbidden to speak by autarchic power. Therefore, we have to oppose specifically and strongly!
