U.S. President Barack Obama will launch an effort to reform the nation＇s health care system with a much-anticipated forum at the White House Thursday.

Mr. Obama has invited more than 120 people to the forum, including doctors, patients, health insurers and lawmakers, to discuss how to lower costs for the world＇s most expensive health care system. The president says the rising cost of health care poses a threat to the overall U.S. economy.

Mr. Obama also wants to expand the system so more people will have access to health insurance. An estimated 46 million Americans have no health coverage.

In his 2010 budget proposal, the president has allocated $634 billion over 10 years to fund healthcare reform.

The administration is working to avoid the mistakes made by the Clinton administration in its unsuccessful efforts to reform the U.S. health care system in 1990s. The initiative, led by then-first lady Hillary Clinton, was conceived during a series of closed-door meetings, and presented to congressional lawmakers as a large, complex piece of legislation.

Observers say the secrecy and complexity of the bill allowed opponents to rally support against the Clinton initiative.

Republican lawmakers say they will oppose any plan that will lead to a government-run takeover of the U.S. health care system.
