Tibetan exiles ask for UN intervention

Tibetan groups have called for an intervention by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.

Representatives of several Tibetan groups have said tensions are high in Tibet between the Chinese government and local Tibetans who they say are being intimidated.

The groups say China has begun a military crackdown to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Tibet.

Tibetan UN advocates have asked for a high-level UN engagement with the Chinese authorities 'to stop these brutal crackdowns against the Tibetan people.'

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have already presented reports on the human rights situation in Tibet, including evidence of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, torture, and enforced disappearances.
