Madagascar＇s President Marc Ravalomanana has resigned and has transferred power to the military.

Officials and diplomats on the Indian Ocean island say the president signed an order Tuesday carrying out his decision.

Mr. Ravalomanana had faced weeks of mounting protests led by opposition leader Andry Rajoelina. Rajoelina accused the president of turning into a dictator, and called on him repeatedly to step down.

The government tried to stifle the protests but gradually lost the support of the military.

On Monday, troops took control of a presidential palace in the capital, Antananarivo. Witnesses say Rajoelina entered the palace on Tuesday, greeted by soldiers and cheering supporters.

Mr. Ravalomanana at last report was at a different palace surrounded by staunch supporters and guards.

On Monday, Rajoelina called for the army to arrest the president.

Rajoelina proclaimed himself the island nation＇s new leader last month and has appointed a transitional government, including a designated prime minister, Monja Roindefo.

On Monday, the European Union announced that will not recognize any new leader who comes to power by force in Madagascar.
