Obama Meets with Schwarzenegger, Others on Stimulus Bill

U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with a handful of prominent state and local officials at the White House Friday to discuss spending priorities involving the recently passed economic stimulus bill.

The president will host New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and two governors, Pennsylvania＇s Ed Rendell and Arnold Schwarzenegger of California.  They will discuss spending on transportation infrastructure projects as a means of creating jobs.  

Mr. Obama returned to Washington Thursday after a two-day trip to Mr. Schwarzenegger＇s state to promote his economic policies.  During a speech at an electric car factory near Los Angeles Thursday, he announced a $2 billion competitive grant program for companies with the best ideas to produce equipment for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

At a later appearance in Los Angeles, the president announced a new Web site (www.MakingHomeAffordable.gov) to help homeowners determine if they are eligible for his housing plan.  The plan is designed to help homeowners save money by refinancing or modifying their mortgages.

At his second town hall in as many days, Mr. Obama also announced California would receive $145 million to help communities hard hit by the foreclosure crisis.

California, the largest U.S. state, has been hit especially hard by the economic crisis.   Mr. Obama assured the crowd there would "be brighter days ahead."
