Afghan, US Troops Kill 33 Militants in Helmand Province

Afghan and U.S.-led troops have killed 33 militants following a roadside blast that took the life of a prominent anti-Taliban lawmaker.

The U.S. military says that Afghan forces came under fire from insurgents in the Gereshk district of the country＇s volatile Helmand province on Thursday.

Officials say the troops returned fire once they determined there were no civilians in the area, killing 30 insurgents. One Afghan soldier was wounded.

Helmand province has been called the heart of the Taliban＇s growing insurgency, and a U.S. spokesman called the operation "yet another blow" to the region＇s militants.

The U.S. military says U.S. and Afghan forces also killed three militants during a raid on a bomb-making operation in eastern Logar province Friday.

The actions followed an insurgent attack Thursday in Helmand, that killed Dad Mohammad Khan, a prominent lawmaker who was openly critical of the Taliban.

Officials say Khan, a former intelligence chief for the province, and four men traveling with him died Thursday after militants set off a roadside bomb.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing and praised Khan as a leader who worked to bring peace to the region.

Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the attack in Lashkar Gah district.
