U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

The top U.S. diplomat is headed for Mexico on a two-day trip meant to show support for the country as it battles drug traffickers.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to meet Wednesday with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa in Mexico City.

U.S. officials say the goal is to show support for the Mexican president's crackdown on drug cartels and to dispel concerns about the country's stability.

U.S. President Barack Obama said during at a White House news conference Tuesday that the United States is prepared to "do more" to address drug-related violence along the border with Mexico.

Hours earlier, his administration announced new steps to curb drug-related border traffic in drugs, illegal money and weapons. The plan calls for the deployment of more federal agents, experts and equipment to the border region.

Mr. Obama praised what he called President Calderon's "very courageous" campaign against drug cartels involved in the violence.

Clinton's talks in Mexico are expected to include discussion of the Merida Initiative, a joint effort by both countries to fight cross-border drug crimes. President Calderon has deployed 36,000 troops around Mexico for this effort.

The secretary of state will also visit to the industrial city of Monterrey, near the U.S. border.

A senior State Department official says Clinton added the Monterrey stop to highlight Mexican high-tech companies and research on renewable energy.

Despite areas of agreement, there are still some substantial differences between the two countries on trade issues and immigration.

Separately, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder are scheduled to travel to Mexico next month. President Obama also is expected to visit Mexico in April.
