Suicide Bomber Destroys Pakistani Mosque, Killing 50

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a packed mosque Friday in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 50 people and wounding around 70 others.

Officials say the mosque, full of worshippers for Friday prayers, was destroyed and has collapsed.  It is located near a police check point and is visited by paramilitary forces and tribal police.

There has been no claim of responsibility.

The attack took place in Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal agency, an area where Islamic insurgents have increased attacks on trucks carrying supplies for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan.   

The bombing came just hours before U.S. President Barack Obama was to announce his new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.  A key part of the new plan aims to destroy and dismantle al-Qaida safe havens in Pakistan.
